Dress shirts are my favorite to upcycle. I love how versatile they are and they’re generally easy to work with. There’s no denying that they make the cutest summer clothes that are both lightweight and breathable. And you can easily dress them up or down.
I’ve made it a tradition to do a couple dress shirt upcycle at the start of the summer season. That said, I loved my previous dress shirt upcycle so much that I made a similar version; in continuing with the coquette-inspired bow theme. 😊
The other reason I chose to do another version was so that I could use the opportunity to demonstrate how to create another style neckline. So if you prefer a v-neck instead of a round one, this tutorial is for you. I also wanted to show another way to create a peplum without the need to make ruffles from scratch.

My Takeaway
I’m really happy with the way this project turned out. I’m glad that I went with the elastic/strap combo because I love how it cinches the waist while giving me the option to adjust the fit.
My only regret was not adding a tie strap at the bust, which I’ve done since publishing the video. By the way, I’m wearing reusable nipple covers. I wear them all summer long instead of fussing with a bra & worry if it’s showing. I’ll link them here.
While this peplum is not as full as the other top, the upside is that I was able to keep more of the shirt length since I didn’t have to cut the shirt in half. Also, bust darts weren’t needed because of the gathers at the waist. For this reason, I highly recommend using a large enough shirt so you’ll have extra fabric to gather and give you that peplum effect.
