Hello DIY enthusiasts and fashion lovers! In today’s video, we’ll be taking a pair of jeans and transforming them into a fabulous denim skirt.
This project is actually a custom piece I did for a client. She requested the skirt be designed with the crotch point in the front and spits on the sides instead of the spit down the center front that you normally see. I’m going to show you how I customize these jeans and how you can too.
Three things to look for when choosing jeans for this project are a pair that fits you well, has some stretch and is straight or wide leg (depending on your desired fit).
Now that we’ve covered all the bases, gather your materials and let’s get started

Machine Setup For Topstitching
For best results, there are a few changes you’ll need to make to your sewing machine.
- Increase the Stitch Length: Topstitch looks best when done using a longer stitch length. I prefer to use a stitch length of 3.5 or 4mm. Also, you want your handiwork to closely resemble the topstitch on your ready-made garment which is done using a longer stitch length.
- Consider using a Topstitching Needle: You may be able to get away with using a regular needle (like I did) depending on the thickness of your thread and the size machine needle you have on hand. However, if you struggle with threading your machine needle as it is, then you may want to invest in a few topstitch needles as they have a larger eye.
- Use Regular Thread in the Bobbin: You’ll likely fall into issues if you attempt to use heavy duty topstitch thread for both the top spool AND the bobbin (speaking from experience). Home sewing machines are not equipped to handle the thicker thread, not even the “heavy-duty” machines. For the bobbin thread, you can use the same color as the topstitch thread or one that matches your garment. Either way, it won’t be visible on the right side of your garment (that’s if your machine is working correctly).
