Hello makers! It been awhile since I’ve done a good ol’ sewing pattern hack. Coincidently, the last pattern hack I did was also for a holiday look. I think it has something to do with it being the end of the year where we have one holiday after another, so there’s little time for sewing. With that in mind, I chose a couple festive plaid fabrics and an easy Vogue sewing pattern from the Minerva shop.
Fabric: Minerva Core Range 100% Cotton Poplin Fabric
I chose this lightweight fabric based on the fabric recommendations noted on the pattern which included linen blends, poplin and broadcloth. Using a lightweight fabric is a must for this pattern as the entire jumpsuit is lined. This made it ideal and fairly easy to modify into a reversible romper.
The other reason I chose this fabric was because it’s offered in a wide range of colors and prints that I could use for print mixing (which also made it difficult to choose). I’m always looking for ways to make my clothes more versatile and I enjoy playing around with mixing prints.
Pattern: Vogue Patterns 1708
I love that the jumpsuit has two side pockets and two length variations. The other great thing about it is that it has an elastic waist so it’s easy to get on and off and you don’t have to fuss with inserting a zipper.
The pattern was fairly easy to work with. Putting together the shorts was straightforward. However, the bodice extending into tie ends was a little tricky figuring out. Besides the instructions being unclear, I got the left and right sides of the bodice mixed up, not once but twice! Yikes!
Initially I wanted to do the long version of the jumpsuit until I realized I’d need around 10 yards of fabric (5 yds for the jumpsuit and 5 for the lining). For the shorts version, I used a total of 6 yards. The jumpsuit is very forgiving, so if you’re in between sizes, I’d suggest maybe going with the smaller of the two.
Modifications:
To make the jumpsuit reversible, I made the following changes:
- Shorts Lining: I cut the shorts lining the same length as the shorts then joined them together at the hem.
- Waistband: I needed 4 bands so I cut 2 from each of the plaid prints.
- Pockets: I cut a pocket from each of the plaid prints and sewed one on the left side of the shorts and the other right side of the shorts lining. This way I had a pocket on whichever side I wore it.
- Bodice & Tie End: I cut both sets from each of the plaid prints then switched around the print for the tie ends when joining them to the bodice. This way the bow would be the opposing print when tied in front.
As for cuffing the hem, it wasn’t something I had originally planned. I felt the romper was at an awkward length for my body, so I turned up the hem and really loved the look.
All I did was grab a few safety pins and pinned the cuff on the wrong side to keep it in place. I haven’t quite figured out a better way so this will have to do for now.

Happy Holidays!
Until next time.
