I noticed bustier corset style tops are trending this season. Surely I wasn’t going to pass on an opportunity to slip into something that wasn’t pandemic-wear for once!
I wanted to find a way to make a quick bustier without sacrificing fit. But I wasn’t sure if it was at all possible to achieve the look using just a strapless bra and a dress shirt.
To be honest, I’m not a big fan of pattern drafting. That could very well be because I’m not very good at Math! Haha! I’m a visual being, so naturally I’d choose draping over drafting any day. The DIYer in me was determined to find a work-around, so here’s is what I came up with!
Materials Used:
Precovered Boning (1 yd)
1/2″ Grosgrain Ribbon (1 yd)
White Cotton Fabric (fat quarter)
Satin Ribbon (for shoulder straps)
Molded Strapless Bra (your size)
Women’s Dress Shirt (your size)
Tips for Choosing a Strapless Bra
I recommend choosing a strapless bra that has smooth molded cups and offers full coverage. Most of all, make sure the cups fit you well. You’ll be using the bra as a template, so selecting the wrong style will affect the outcome of your bustier.
If you don’t have an old bra handy, you could check your local thrift store. Look for one in your cup size. The width of the band doesn’t matter as it won’t be needed. For example: if you wear a size 36C, a size 36A could also work… as long as the bra is in your cup size.
