I can’t wait to swap out those dreaded winter coats for much lighter pieces like this DIY poncho. This time of year the weather is so unpredictable that it’s hard to dress for the outdoors.
In my last post, I made a convertible scarf but then thought “What about DIYing ones you already own that you aren’t too fond of anymore? And prob looking to get rid of come Spring?!”
Now I didn’t personally have any that I could use. But, I had a couple pieces of fleece leftover from a project, that were similar in size. If you want to use scarves, I recommend using blanket-like ones. You could even use small lightweight blankets. The point is, try to use something you already have before buying.

The fleece pieces I used were a ¼ yd each at 60 inches wide so ½ yd in total. Feel free to add more to suit your needs or depending on the look you’re going for. To avoid looking boxy, you could curve the hem or do a high-lo style like I did.
If you’re intimidated by the blanket stitch, you could do one of the following instead:
- Add binding, in a contrasting color.
- Turn the edge under once and sew.
- Serge the edges or use a big zigzag stitch.

It’s probably best paired with pieces that are more slimming to balance the volume of the poncho. Timeless and trendy, I can see it being in rotation, whether it be work or play. Plus who doesn’t like to feel like they’re wrapped in a soft blanket?
