[VIDEO] DIY Celeb Look For Less using Thrifted Material

If you didn’t catch my last post, I did a 2-part challenge on Instagram called the “Holiday Thrifted Outfit Challenge”. Part 1 was a semi-formal look, while Part 2 was formal (think New Years Eve). The idea behind it was to get creative and put together an outfit using ONLY thrifted fabrics or clothing, along with what you already have.

For Part 2, I wanted to recreate a “designer look for less” and was inspired by this gold pleated dress from designer Maria Lucia Lohan. While thrifting, I spotted a 3-piece curtain set and immediately thought back to this dress. Even though I saw it online a while ago, the eye-catching belted waist was unforgettable. I took that as a sign and was like, “I have to recreate this dress now.” Links on where to find similar items are listed below.

Working with Pleated Fabric

From my experience when working with pre-pleated fabric, try to keep your design as simple as possible. In other words, choose styles with basic shapes without a whole lot of details. Surely you wouldn’t wanna risk distorting those pretty pleats!

That’s not to say you can’t experiment with more complex designs especially if you’re an experienced sewer. You could use it in conjunction with lining/backing fabric to keep the pleats in place.

One of the reason I started this challenge was to break the stigma around thrifting that you are wearing some one else’s throwaways.

It’s a great way to take advantage of the resources that available to us. One man’s trash can truly be another man’s treasure.
