Utility pants styles are a huge fashion trend this Spring. I thought I’d take the opportunity to not only show you how to get in on the trend, but how you can add pockets to your ready-made clothes.
Patch pockets are all you need to convert a plain pair of pants into cargos for a rugged, edgy look. Pockets are not only practical but can act as a stylish design feature. They go by many names and styles. You have the gusset or bellow pocket, 3D, pleated, slanted….just to name a few.
In this tutorial, I’ll break down how to draft and sew a few of the most popular cargo style pockets. This includes the Hip pocket, the 3D Gusset Flap pocket and the Box Pleat pocket also with a Flap. I’ll also give you ideas for a couple other variations. For closures, you can use snaps (my fav), velcro or buttons.
I hope I made the tutorial easy enough for you to give this wardrobe staple a try. However, if you’re not up to the task of making your own, for a limited time, you can grab a POC-KIT here.

The End Result
You may have noticed that I added a pocket over a pocket. Because why not? You can never have too many 🙂 What I love about patch pockets is that they are deep enough to fit a cellphone and even a small wallet. Perfect for those days when you don’t feel like lugging around a handbag.
