If you were gifted chocolate in one of these clear plastic boxes for Valentine’s day or maybe you treated yourself, here’s one way you can reuse it. Well, after you’ve savored all your yummy treats that is! For this DIY, I used materials I had laying around the house.    

Just a quick FYI, I’ve had this DIY sitting in my pile of pending projects for years! Crazy right?! Simply because I got stuck on what closure to use (smh). I circled back to it for the sake of Valentine’s Day.

Having said that, this is actually one of Ferrero Rocher’s older chocolate boxes. The edges are now more rounded and I’m not sure if the label is removable but this one wasn’t. So I made a patch to conceal it and dotted rhinestones between the diamond-cuts, to accentuate the design.

FUN FACT: According to Ferrero Rocher, they are on a journey to make their packaging more sustainable by making their eco-designed boxes from polypropylene, compared to previous boxes. They also encourage people to recycle when and where possible. (Nice!)

Upcycling The Box Clutch

Supplies You’ll Need:

1. On the bottom of the box, use pliers to break off the inside lip. This will allow you to add hinges.
2. Afterwards, locate and trace the screw holes on the bottom using one of the hinges.
3. To make the holes, heat a hinge screw then press the tip against the markings to melt the plastic. You can also use a soldering iron for this. *Make sure to do this in a well ventilated area.
4. Next, add the hinges to the box and secure them with the machine screws and hex nuts. You may want to cut down the screws with a hacksaw.
5. For the handle, you can probably get away with gluing the knob but I would recommend making holes for the drawer pull (in the same way you did for the hinges) and secure it. I used a spare drawer pull I had laying around.
6. As for the closure, glue the box latch on top with one half on each side making sure they are aligned with each other.
7. (Optional) To enclose the sides of the box, I used two plastic PVC packaging that I found. You can use a PVC sheet instead.
8. Open the box and measure the PVC against the sides then cut them into a tapered shape as shown. Glue one to each side to enclose the box.
9. Finish it off by decorating the front however you like. I made a patch (shown below), using leftover materials I had from past projects.

TIP: If don’t want others to see what’s inside your clutch, you can add a pouch or maybe decorative paper by dabbing a little glue in just the corners inside the box. You can also try painting the inside, though I’m not sure how well that will hold up.

DIY Bow Heart Patch

Supplies You’ll Need:

1. First, glue the fur heart in the center of the felt one, leaving even spacing around the edges for the trim.
2. Starting with one half of the heart, measure and cut a piece of rhinestone trim the same length. Then glue it to the edge of the felt working in sections.
3. Do the same for the other half, making sure the ends the trim are flush with each other for a seamless finish.
4. For the bow, cut a piece of rhinestone trim approx. 8″ long then loop one ends as shown to form one half of the bow.
5. Afterwards, do the same with the other end overlapping the loops in the center.
6. To complete the bow, cut another piece of trim approx. 2.5″ long, then center it in the middle of the bow.
7. Flip the bow over and glue one end to the back as shown.
8. Do the same for the other end, gluing it to the back of the bow. Trim the end first if necessary.
9. To finish, glue the bow to the center of your patch. Now glue it to the center of your box clutch and you are done!
